Classifying materials

Wherever we look, the materials which make up our world are composed of tiny particles. It doesn't matter whether it's the gases which form the atmosphere, the water and salts in the ocean, or the paint and steel of a ship. When we examine the structure of the different substances they are all made of particles. These particles may be separate, or joined together, and it is the way these particles are arranged, and how they are joined together, which determines the properties of a given material.

The steel of the ship, the water and salts in the sea, and the clouds in the sky are all made up of particles.
