History: Key Stage 3
Historians divide history into periods. Each period is different from another and yet things change slowly over time for the ordinary people. The coming of the Normans in 1066 altered the way in which society was structured, but for the ordinary peasant his way of living hardly changed. He might have had less or no rights as a Saxon, but everyday life was still the struggle for existence it had always been.
The Feudal System
In 1066 William I conquered England and lent his barons, or tenants-in-chief, land throughout the country as a reward. In return they promised to fight for him. We call their promise to the King homage. It was also a way of controlling his new lands. This system is called the feudal system.
