Search History Civil War 11-14 Key Stage 3

One job of the historian is to explain events. The English Civil War was an event (something that happened) and historians have given a number of reasons why that event happened, the causes of the event. Some causes built up over a long period of time and we need to go back a long time before the event to find out about them; these are known as "long-term" causes. Other causes are things which happened close to the event and were "triggers' or "sparks"; these are known as "short-term" causes. Also when historians investigate events they usually find that it is difficult to explain why things happened because there are a number of factors involved. The next few pages will be about three factors which help to explain why the Civil War happened:

  • the King's belief in "Divine Right"
  • taxes
  • religion
