Any study of St Lucia should not be done in isolation. The island has become an important and growing centre for tourism with all the benefits and problems that this brings. Any of the studies of St Lucia should contrast with other areas. The study could contrast tourism in St Lucia with other countries in different parts of the world, considering the way in which industry developed and the implications to the economy. Suitable contrasting localities might be France, the busiest destination in Europe for tourists and Canada, which has developed as more than a North American locality from the late 1980s. Other considerations could be the effects of history on the geography of the area, the effects of climate on vegetation and human geography including agriculture. The growth of industry in an area with few natural resources is worth consideration. The distribution of population as it relates in the topography and the effects of both history and advances in medicine on the population structure are studies that would allow a contrast with other areas. The transport structure of St Lucia with no railway, two airports and one major road would be worth considering. |
