Homophones

Many words that we use have the same sound but have different meanings and spellings, e.g. hear/here, steel/steal, your/you're.

These are known as homophones, from the Greek homos meaning 'the same' and phone meaning 'sound'.

Using the wrong word is quite common in students' written work, so being aware of homophones is very important to you. If you look out for them then you can:

  • check you have the right word, using a dictionary
  • learn ones that are a problem for you.
