To double or not to double

Recognising prefixes can be particularly helpful if you are unsure of when to double letters. As prefixes are added to the beginnings of words, removing them can help to establish whether the root is spelt correctly.

For example, a common spelling error is 'dissappear'. Removing the prefix 'dis-' leaves 'sappear', which is clearly incorrect. The correct spelling, of course, is 'disappear'.
