Nouns - Collective

'Collective noun' is the name for a group of people, animals or things. Here are some collective nouns. Can you tell who or what makes up the group?

  • Crowd = a group of... ?

  • Team = a group of... ?

  • Herd = a group of... ?

  • Nest = a group of... ?

  • Zoo = a group of... ?

Do you know the collective noun for a group of lions? It is a pride of lions. Here are some odd collective nouns:

  • a siege of herons

  • a sloth of bears

  • a kindle of kittens.

Better known collective nouns are:

  • a crate of crockery

  • a galaxy of stars

  • a punnet of strawberries

  • a peal of bells

  • a bunch of grapes

  • a hand of bananas.

Some collective nouns tell the exact number in the group: a pair of shoes, a dozen eggs, a score of sheep.
