 History Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth was once one of the most important ports on the east coast of England. Built on a sandbank where the river Bure and Wensum meet before flowing into the sea, the medieval town was very wealthy, one of Britain's busiest fishing ports until the 1960s and a popular seaside resort since the mid-nineteeth century.

Today it has a rich heritage and although still heavily dependent on the tourists, much of its employment is based servicing the North Sea gas and oil industry.
