Sport

The Greeks believed that a healthy body was very important, and most men and boys practised sports every day because they enjoyed them and wanted to keep fit. Sport was a good preparation for war too. The Greek armies had to be fit enough to march long distances, carrying all their heavy equipment, and then begin the fight with the enemy.

Athletes wore no clothes because they were very proud of their bodies, and also because the weather was so hot. When they had practised their sport they would take a bath, and visit the anointing room where they oiled their bodies and then scraped them clean.
