The theatre

The Greeks enjoyed singing and dancing, and the early Greeks would hold festivals after the grape harvest, to honour Dionysus, the god of wine. As time passed the people began to dress up in costumes and masks, and later began to act out stories which became plays.

In the cities the plays became very popular and special theatres were built.

The theatres were built on hillsides, with the area for acting at the bottom of the slope. The seats were like stone steps, built into the hillside.

Plays were put on about once a month, and the performance lasted all day.
