Women at work | ||
|
At home the women would be busy spinning fleece and weaving fine woollen cloth for all the family's clothes, wall hangings and blankets. They would make their own flour, and preserve the vegetables and fruit to be eaten in the winter. Young girls in wealthy families were sometimes taught to read at home, and when they married they would often take private lessons to continue their music and writing. One of the most famous Greek poets was a woman called Sappho. |
