Women at home | ||
|
Women in Greek society had to do exactly as their fathers or husbands said. A girl would get married at about 15 years of age, and would be taken to her husband's house in a chariot. After the wedding the chariot would be broken as a sign that the bride could never go home again. It was the woman's job to run the household and organise the servants. They would spend most of the time at home. The city streets were noisy, dirty and often very unsafe at night, so it was not considered 'respectable' for women to leave the house very much. Slaves or husbands would do the shopping, and the women would perhaps visit friends now and again, or go to the theatre with their husband, or a male slave. |
