Ancient Greek food

Greek wives and daughters usually did the cooking, but rich Greek families would employ cooks and slaves to prepare the food.

The Greek diet was very healthy. They ate lots of bread, beans and olives. They had plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in the summer, and dried fruit in the winter. In winter they would also eat apples they had stored, cheeses they had made in summer, and lentils. As most of the Greeks lived very near the sea, they ate a lot of fish, squid and shellfish.

The Greeks ate meat too, although the poorer Greeks could not often afford it. When a poor person could afford to buy meat they would eat every scrap. They would even boil the brains!
