The Farne Islands are located off the coast of Northumbria. They can only be reached by boat from the harbour at Seahouses. The Farnes are made up of about thirty rocky islands which are owned by the National Trust. Many of these islands are covered by the tide for part of the day. There are two main groups of islands; Inner and Outer Farne. The Farnes are rich in wildlife and history. Eighteen species of bird breed on the islands, including puffins, kittiwakes, guillemots and sandwich terns. The islands are also an important breeding ground for grey seals. |
