 Geography Aerial Photography

Teacher notes

This unit is intended to help children at KS2 to develop an understanding of aerial photographs. The first images focus on how aerial photographs are taken and what they may be used for.

Later images show the children a range of localities, both rural and urban, and these images are accompanied by activities. The aim of these activities is to develop the children's skills in the interpretation of aerial photographs. The activities are divided into three kinds.

Aerial view of Bath, Avon

The first kind, such as the sequence of images using the River Wye, asks the children to look at an aerial photograph and then to highlight a feature by either drawing with the mouse, for example to follow the line of a river, or by clicking with the mouse on a specific object. If the child does the activity correctly the screen moves to a well done screen, and the child is given the next task using that photograph.

If the question is answered incorrectly the child is given a screen offering the opportunity for a second chance at that part of the activity. If this is correct, it links to the well done screen. If it is incorrect it links to a screen showing the correct area highlighted, and leading to the next question.

The second kind of activity is similar to the first in that children must locate features by looking at the aerial photograph, for example sequences related to photographs of Tormorden and Whitstable. Here, if the response is correct the child moves to the well done screen and the next question. If the response is incorrect then the child moves to a screen highlighting the correct feature and leading to the next question.

The third type of activity is one where an aerial photograph contains 'hot' features. As the child moves the mouse over the photograph these features will be highlighted and the child can click on the highlighted feature for more information.
